At the beginning of December, a sensational story hit the tabloids: President Vladimir Putin tripped, fell down the stairs and involuntarily soiled himself.

It proved a compelling story for Western audiences, largely horrified by Putin's invasion of Ukraine and longing for his eventual downfall.

The claims have been covered by The Sun, New York Post, Daily Mail, Gawker and Newsweek, among others. They attributed them to one anonymous source: a mysterious Telegram account known as General SVR.

The channel is a prime example of the wild media ecosystem that has flourished since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A lot of violent videos and flashy claims that often reach a wide audience without enough evidence or context. Some of it inevitably spills over into the mainstream media.

General SVR emerged in 2020 and claimed to be led by former and current employees of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (FSI) and other government agencies.

In a statement to Insider, a spokesperson for General SVR declined to name the sources of the account, citing personal security concerns, but said they had "full confidence."

Since its inception, the report has spawned a steady stream of unproven but intriguing claims about the inner workings of the Kremlin and Putin's alleged health.

They range from claims in May that Putin was stepping down temporarily to undergo cancer surgery; Putin had a coughing fit before he announced the mobilization of the reservists in September.

The latest scatological claim drew a rare public rebuttal from the Kremlin, which told Newsweek: "It's a complete lie."

The Kremlin's own statements are themselves highly unreliable. But the fact that the epicenter of Russian power was forced to assure the world that Putin is not pooping himself is a testament to the extraordinary power of the SVR general.

Arik Toler of the reputable investigative group Bellingcat in May urged his Twitter followers to "disregard everything" coming from the account.

Russian media experts told insiders that the SVR general was unlikely to be a credible source - arguing that despite the temporary embarrassment it might cause Putin, Putin would likely do more harm than good.

The SVR general is sometimes referred to by the pseudonym "Viktor Mihailovic", but no one knows for sure who is behind this account, but the two names are often used based on different theories.

Putin 'to Become Dad Again' At 69

One of them is Valery Solovei, a Russian academic who is sometimes called a conspiracy theorist, who was searched by the Russian authorities on February 16 of this year, the independent Russian news agency Meduza reported.

Nightingale is the source of rumors about Putin published under his own name, such as his remarks to The Sun in 2020, when he claimed the Russian president was ready to step down by January 2021. As you know, Putin did not resign.

As "Meduza" quotes local media, Solovei was named as a witness in the investigation of the SVR general, who was accused of violating the Russian legislation on inciting hatred, but as a result he was released.

In comments to Insider, Salovey said he was not affiliated with the channel, but claimed it had "high credibility" and that even Putin himself was informed of its content.

In response to claims that he is a conspiracy theorist, Nightingale pointed to his statements that have come true, including predicting that Russia would invade Ukraine.

The second person associated with the account is Ukrainian lawyer Viktor Yermalaev, Meduza reports. Insider was unable to contact him, but he firmly denied Meduza, stating that he had no contact with anyone in Russia.

Dr. Lucy Birge, a researcher who specializes in Russian media and politics, told Insider that it "wouldn't be difficult for a Ukrainian running the account to figure out what the strategic goal is."

According to Dr. Jade McGlynn, a researcher of Russian propaganda and media, the wild world of the SVR general should be understood in the larger context of how Telegram is used in Russia.

Russia's traditional media landscape is steadily tightening, as Insider's John Heltivanger reported , prompting many independent media outlets to move outside of Russia and be declared "foreign agents."

Parallel to this process came Telegram, an encrypted platform that allows unfiltered anonymous posting to a wide audience. (The Kremlin tried to block the app and failed).

Originally perceived as a place for authentic voices, Telegram soon became "a place for impersonation and information operations," McGlynn told Insider.

Information operations are missions typically undertaken by the military to disseminate information to harm an enemy or influence a conflict.

While there are dozens of active, well-read outlets — both pro and anti-Putin — General SVR permeates Western media because it "hits hard," McGlynn said.

For them, part of the problem lies in simplifying the situation — and possible solutions to the conflict.

The constant headlines showing Putin on the brink of death without any real evidence can make Western readers think, "great, well, Putin will be gone soon, so we don't need to worry too much," she said.

This, in turn, could reduce the public's insistence on continued military aid to Ukraine - an issue that is increasingly being questioned in the US and UK.

Birge agreed. "It is not difficult to understand how this image of Russia is sold," she told Insider. And there's even a benefit for Putin that no matter how negative the story is, it puts Russia at the center of a world power, she said.

For Birge, this phenomenon says a lot more about what Western news consumers want to read than it does about Russia.

"Obviously there's stuff going on behind the scenes and we don't know what it is," she said. "It's tempting to follow this unknown person who has all the answers." Putin is sick - or should we think he is? An oligarch close to the Kremlin wrote that the president is "very ill with blood cancer."

The tabloids, thanks to the sudden boom in diagnostics on Twitter, probably think so.
