A routine traffic stop for cellphone use led Fort Bragg police officers to find fentanyl in both pill and powder form and more than $12,000 in cash from street vendors.

On Saturday, October 22, 2022, around 9:30 a.m., 21-year-old Jonathan Martinez was seen using his cell phone while driving. Upon initial contact, an officer with the Fort Bragg Police Department observed a pound of marijuana in plain sight. During a search of the vehicle, officers found oxycodone pills and approximately $300. It was learned that the driver had previously been released from prison for selling cannabis.

Looking for more evidence of drug sales, the FBI obtained a search warrant for Martinez's home. With the help of the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, law enforcement recovered 220 counterfeit oxycodone pills known as "M30s," 13 grams of suspected powdered fentanyl, Xanax, a digital scale and more than $12,000 in cash.
Martinez was booked on multiple charges including sale/transportation of a controlled substance, sale/transportation of marijuana, violation of a court order and using a cell phone while driving.
Fort Bragg Police Chief Neil Cerwinka told us the M30s are supposed to look like standard oxycodone pills, but fentanyl is used as the poison. Officers with fentanyl powder are often used to mix with other drugs, Chief Cervenka explained.
Prior to becoming police chief, Serwinka served 22 years with the Turlock Police Department. Comparing the effects of fentanyl on the North Shore to previous hits, Chief Cerwinka was concerned that the lack of emergency responders and greater geographic distance could increase the risk of fentanyl on the North Shore.

Regarding the area, Chief Cervenka warned the public that "Fannel is everywhere," and this weekend's bust of Fort Bragg shows it's in the community. He said the drug is being transported up and down Interstate 1 and is also being used by high school students. Parents of teens should have an "open and honest conversation" about drugs and their dangers. Chief Cervenka's message to the senior Fort Bragg community was simple: "Be careful."

The letter, obtained by Fox News Digital, includes Sens. Ed Markey, D-Mass., John Corinne, R-Texas, Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Martin Heinrich, D-N. M.
It was addressed by Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III reported "disturbing reports of drug overdoses among US military personnel" and at least 14 and 30 deaths, according to Rolling Stone. 2020 in Fort Bragg. The North Carolina base is home to the 82nd Airborne Division, Special Forces and Joint Special Operations Command.
"This announcement follows recent reports of overdoses involving cadets from Fort Bliss and West Point," the letter said. He continues: "At Fort Bragg, Fort Bliss, West Point, and in states with high military populations such as Alaska, fatal and non-fatal overdoses caused by intentional and unintentional opioids, and in particular, fentanyl, these incidents continue. are of an ongoing and challenging pattern.
Abuse of opioids, especially prescription painkillers, among military hospitals and military personnel is well documented, but the introduction of fentanyl poses an additional risk, the senators said.
"Even small amounts of illegal fentanyl make lethal recreational opioid use more dangerous, often for those who are unaware that it is in the drugs they take," the letter said.

Among their questions to Austin, the senators asked for an accurate count of overdose deaths among active-duty military members since 2017; Whether treatment for military personnel, including substance abuse treatment (MAT), is uniformly available at all military facilities; how the Department of Defense supports families of military personnel who have died of overdoses; and what protocols exist for DoD to identify and respond to overdoses in general or at specific military installations.

"We are committed to reducing DOD's [substance use disorder] and illicit drug use, researching and monitoring the problem, improving access to treatment, expanding and valuing behavioral health care for active duty military and veterans. We are committed to reducing overdoses. We sincerely appreciate your efforts, the senators wrote. "While these measures have shown some effectiveness, recent reports highlight a problem of overdoses that may be underreported, and Urgent action is needed to reduce the impact of SUD on those who have sacrificed their lives to serve our country. "
