Saturday's event begins at 10 a.m. with the Kessel Run 5K, sponsored by Fort Knox Sports and Fitness. Named after the famous smuggler's run that Han Solo claimed to have completed in less than 12 parsecs, the family-friendly event will begin and end at the library.

Admission is $20 for participants 13 and older; $15 for ages 5-12; Children up to 5 years old participate for free. Registrants will receive a special Kessel Run 5K t-shirt. T-shirts for children 5 and under are $10.

At 11 a.m., after the race, readers will have the opportunity to watch Indoor Jungle Moon. A life-size replica of the front of the Imperial Bunker will serve as a backdrop for the young rebels to climb aboard some fan-made Return of the Jedi speeder bikes. These simulations feature lights and sounds that give youngsters the feeling of floating on the surface of the moon.

After 5K parsecs, young and old will have the chance to enter Endor, a life-size replica of the jungle moon in Return of the Jedi. They will also be able to jump on two fast bikes and capture the moment on camera. (Photo credit: courtesy of Barr Memorial Library) View original

The highlight of the day will be a special "The Empire Strikes Back" themed "Return of the Jedi" encounter with members of the 501st Legion and the Rebel Legion.

Packed Community Events Schedule Offers Fun Filled Outlook For September

Imperials and Rebels have been "hitting the bars" at the library's annual event since 2015. These volunteers, from the Bluegrass Garrison and Fulcrum Base, will dazzle young and old with screen-accurate Star Wars Saga costumes and accessories.

Families are encouraged to imagine themselves with members of the Empire, Rebellion and other members of the galaxy far, far away who may appear.

A feature of the day will be an action figure display called "Celebrate the Love," a collection of vintage Kenner and custom Star Wars figures. The event will be the public's last chance to see the figures in action. (Photo credit: courtesy of Barr Memorial Library) View original

The exhibit, now on display, reflects the theme of Return of the Jedi. Some of Kenner's original action figures, vehicles and toys were created for the popular toy line in the early 1980s. These original items are displayed alongside the custom-made figurines, in the "cut bush" style of how the original figurines were made. Various custom creations are of characters that Kenner never produced in the original toy line or included in variations of Kenner's work, including alternate versions of the Emperor and Lando Clarice.

There's also a custom redesign of the original Kenner Death Star playset, a version featuring the Emperor's throne room. The exhibition will be open during regular library hours.

May the force be with you on this special Star Wars Day. For more information, call the library at 502-624-1232.
